Martin’s Food Markets corporate officials are developing plans to replace the Waynesboro store with a new facility in 2014.
Chris Brand, spokesman for Giant/Martin’s, said Thursday he could not confirm the new grocery store’s location, but said the project is in the works.
“Our plans are to build a replacement store for the Waynesboro store,” he said. “We’re looking preliminarily at an opening in 2014.”
Brand said he could not address the specific reasons for moving the store, but he did say the corporation takes seriously the customer feedback it receives via Facebook, email and letters.
“We do feel it’s important we continue to look at our fleet of stores and make them the best they can be for the customers,” he said.
The Waynesboro store opened in the Wayne Heights Mall on Pa. 16 in November 1971. It was enlarged in 1985, remodeled in 1992 and remodeled again in 2002.
Today, it employs 92 store associates, Brand said.
Brand said he was unsure whether the 31,800-square-foot store is in a space owned or leased by Giant/Martin’s.
Modern Giant Food Stores and Martin’s Food Markets typically are larger than the one in Waynesboro. A prototype store in Mount Joy, Pa., is 50,000 square feet, and the largest of the corporation’s 198 stores is the one on Linglestown Road in Harrisburg, Pa., at 100,000 square feet.
“It’s always our intention to give customers a 21st-century shopping experience with state-of-the-art amenities,” Brand said.
Giant/Martin’s has its headquarters in Carlisle, Pa. It has stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia.
