After a life well-lived, which included working at the Willard Hotel and the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., working at the Hagerstown courthouse, volunteering at Hagerstown Medical Center, raising a family and traveling with work and for pleasure, Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Steinmetz died peacefully Feb. 16, 2013.
She was born in Hagerstown, Md., on April 27, 1923. Libby married Edward D. Steinmetz. They raised their family in Washington, D.C. Libby was predeceased by her husband, Edward, and is survived by their children, Ralph M. Baker Jr. (Patricia) of Crofton, Md., and Mary Kalmus (Ralph) of Bowie, Md.; four grandchildren, Steve, Krista, Kimberly and Kelly; and eight great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Allison, Edward, Alexander, Kaitlin, Emily, Nicholas and Vincent. She also is survived by two loving sisters, Josephine Obitts of Hagerstown and Frances Hartman of Lewistown, Pa.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
All who knew Libby spoke of her caring, love, and deep devotion for family and friends, as well as her knowledge of current events. She will be remembered by all for her kindness, her contagious laugh, her encouragement in any situation and her firm "yes" when we needed her help.
A memorial service will be at St. Mary Catholic Church, Hagerstown, on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 1 p.m. Interment will be private.
