A Riverside County crossing guard discovered the 4-year-old female terrier mix dog along Center Street and Transit Avenue.
A nearby parent assisted with getting the dog off the tracks.
The two good Samaritans at first did not realize the dog was still alive.
The pair called Riverside County Animal Services, who transported the dog to the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter.
Veterinary Services team members immediately treated the dog for shock and provided her with pain medications.
They presumed that the dog was hit by a train.
The dog lost her front right leg from the accident, but the veterinary team was able to save the dog's life.
It's likely that the dog will need further surgeries after she is stabilized.
A member of the veterinary team has committed to fostering the dog at home to make sure she recovers.
She has named the dog "Trinity."
