11. Hotel dining, take two

To appreciate the re-imagined NoMI Kitchen, which was unveiled last year, it helps to have known the original NoMI. Only then can one appreciate $16 salads and upper-$20s (and beyond) entrees as steps in the direction of affordability. The tab at NoMI Kitchen is perhaps 10 to 15 percent below what it was, but it remains a pricey proposition.

  15. Michael Pena's adjusting to the view from up there

Michael Pena wanted to sit closer to the floor-to-ceiling windows at NoMI during a recent lunch — and who wouldn't? The trendy restaurant on the seventh floor of the Park Hyatt hotel offers customers a scenic view of Michigan Avenue and the Water Tower building, and in the case of Pena, who shares top billing with Jake Gyllenhaal in the upcoming film "End of Watch," a far different view from the one he was used to growing up in Chicago.

  17. River North rooftop hop

River North has the highest concentration of rooftop bars in the city, ranging from beer gardens a few flights up from street level to penthouse-like perches atop high-rise hotels. A few are technically terraces rather than rooftops, but when you have a cocktail in hand with the sun shining on your face, we promise you won’t care much about technicalities.

  21. Ice cream -- It's what's for winter

Defying the notion that ice cream is a treat best left to the long, hot days of summer, chefs are creating frozen desserts in flavors that are synonymous with the short, dark days of winter. Here is a sampling of such desserts to be enjoyed now — indoors, of course, where the thermostat keeps things comfy.
