1. Satisfying a last-minute taste for carbonara

This is not a typical spaghetti alla carbonara. The traditional dish is a simple combination: spaghetti tossed with sauteed guanciale (pig's cheek, but often crisped pancetta or bacon are used instead), fresh eggs, Parmesan and Romano cheeses and lots of black pepper.

  3. How to reuse downy mildew-infected soil in the landscape

Last year my potted impatiens had that terrible new disease, impatiens downy mildew, and all died. Can I use my old infected potting soil in non-flower beds this year? Send it to the landfill?

  7. On Columbia's lakefront, the return of a favorite

Who said there are no second acts in American dining? Clyde's of Columbia has been an anchor on the Columbia lakefront since 1975. That's impressive, but time has a way of catching up with everything. And now that Columbia is in the middle of a multi-...

  15. Jonathan Gold | L.A. restaurant review: AOC in new digs with familiar tastes

When the first AOC opened a decade ago, nobody quite knew what to make of the place, a wine bar near the original Farmers Market that seemed to specialize in cured meats, salads and lots of tiny dishes that reflected the flavors of coastal Italy and Provence, but also Spain and North Africa. We were younger then, and as much as we respected chef Suzanne Goin, who was moonlighting from her restaurant Lucques, neither harissa nor the herby marinade chermoula were quite in our vocabularies yet.

Chicago has seen vegetarian restaurants before, and vegetable menus before, but nothing, not even the vegetable tasting menus that Charlie Trotter offered during his long career, compares to the Vegan menu currently featured at Next. In more than 20 courses across four hours, Next dazzles diners with one inventive vegan creation after another.

  19. Rockenwagner's white asparagus menu at Venice cafe; more expensive per pound than lobster

The email just came in from Hans Röckenwagner announcing the start of Spargle season at his restaurant 3 Square Café in Venice. Röckenwagner, a German native, introduced the tradition of white asparagus at his restaurant Röckenwagner almost 30 years ago. Asparagus lovers swarmed the place each June for the chef’s spargelkarte, or asparagus menu, which featured traditional dishes along with the chef’s more creative flourishes.

  23. Project green

Late spring and summer often seem to be bursting at the seams with things that are green and growing, and the urge to bring some of that freshness indoors is nearly impossible to resist.
