  5. Curry braised lamb shanks

Nothing takes the chill out of January like a house filled with the aroma of slow-cooking goodness. In our house, that aroma frequently includes a touch of curry spice. On braised meat, on roasting veggies and simmered in a pot of stew or soup.

  7. Tromboncino squash: A fast grower that can throw some curves

The tromboncino squash in Nancy Howell’s garden plot doesn’t resemble the trombone for which it’s named but, rather, a french horn. “This is what happens when you stay away for one day,” she says, laughing, holding up a...

  9. It started with biscotti

Larry Blanas switched careers, and worlds. After 30 years in the construction business, he now wrestles with gingerbread and octopus with violet tentacles. The cellphones he sells are frosted. Warm zucchini muffins fly out the door.

  21. Irrational exuberance at the farmers market?

True confession: I always overbuy at the farmers market. If I go with limited dollars, I find myself looking for the best bargains. A full wallet prompts stocking up — for what, I am not sure, because I will go back the following weekend and perhaps hit the downtown markets during my lunch hour. I am just happier with a full complement of vegetables in the fridge.

They're everywhere, but they're not as widely anticipated as asparagus, as beloved as peas or as coveted as strawberries.
