Illinoisans awoke to news that their governor had been arrested, handcuffed and hauled before a federal magistrate on sweeping charges he conspired to sell his office many times over--including putting a price on the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.
U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald said the governor's actions forced his office to intervene. "Gov. Blagojevich has been arrested in the middle of what we can only describe as a political corruption crime spree," he said. Fitzgerald said Blagojevich's "conduct would make [ Abraham] Lincoln roll over in his grave."

Thursday's 21-0 vote for impeachment by the special House Investigation Committee concluded the panel's work almost a month to the day after Blagojevich's Dec. 9 arrest at his home on federal charges that he used the governor's office to try to enrich himself personally and politically.
A House vote in favor of impeachment—as predicted by Speaker Michael Madigan—would be the first ever for an Illinois governor and would send the issue to the Senate for a trial.

Rod R. Blagojevich was the 40th governor of Illinois. He was first elected in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. Blagojevich was born in Chicago in 1956. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1979 and earned his law degree from Pepperdine in 1983. Prior to being elected governor, Blagojevich was a Cook County Assistant State's Attorney. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996. On December 9, 2008, Blagojevich was arrested for political corruption. The Illinois House of Representatives impeached him, and the Senate voted on January 29, 2009, to remove him from office.
