  11. GOP presidential field outdoes itself again and again

Well, it's about time. At last we have a candidate with the guts to close down our embassy in Iran were she elected president. Thank you, Michele Bachmann. Oh — and thank you Jimmy Carter as well, since he closed down the embassy there in 1980 in response to the hostage crisis in Tehran at the time. That we have had no embassy in Iran in the last 31 years matters less than that Congresswoman Bachmann has the intestinal fortitude to come out against our having one there now. It is no wonder she was the darling of the tea party.

  13. The value of the Iowa caucuses

Iowa may be "too white, too evangelical, too rural" to be a good representative of the U.S. electorate, as NBC's Andrea Mitchell puts it. The caucuses, requiring a big commitment of time, may also be an awkward proxy for a real vote. Some people think the...

  15. Santorum and the Iowa losers

After the Iowa caucuses one year, I recall, every candidate in the field went before TV cameras to proclaim the outcome a victory for him. This time, the claims were not quite so universal. But it seems clear that there was only one winner last night:...

  17. The decline of smart Republicans

One of the surprises of this presidential campaign is how many Republican candidates are doing their best to appear stupid. Michele Bachmann blares groundless myths about a vaccine, Rick Perry can't remember which departments he wants to abolish, and...

  19. Rick Perry's birther 'fumble'

It may look like Rick Perry made an unforced error this week by raising the issue of the President's birth certificate even as he was unveiling his flat tax proposal. In this way, he stepped on his own message while inviting scorn from independent voters,...

  21. Perry's steep learning curve

In his presidential campaign, Mitt Romney has one big disadvantage: his Massachusetts health care program, which looks a lot like Obama's national plan. But he has one big advantage that is probably becoming apparent to Rick Perry: He's done this before....

  23. The shadow of Rick Perry

I've been to several campaign events in Iowa in recent weeks, and what's surprised me is how many people bring up someone who's not even in the race: Texas Gov. Rick Perry. At almost every appearance by former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty or Rep. Michele...
