  3. The real IRS scandal

The real scandal is why the IRS approved for tax-exempt status organizations that were plainly political and not "social welfare" organizations, as section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code requires ("Taxing the tea party," May 14). The GOP's phony outrage obscures the fact that not a single application from the tea party-affiliated organizations for tax exempt status was denied. They probably should have been.

  12. The giant, shocking IRS scandal that wasn't

There's nothing Washington likes better than a scandal. So official Washington was absolutely orgasmic this week while dealing with not one, but three scandals at the same time. Not one of which, sadly, was a sex scandal. First, there were accusations...

  14. The GOP pivots on the IRS scandal

The scandal surrounding the Internal Revenue Service's handling of applications for tax-exempt status by "tea party" groups and other right-leaning organizations took a sharp turn at the House Ways and Means Committee on Friday. In addition to decrying how those groups' applications were flagged for extra scrutiny, Republicans on the panel -- especially Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) -- argued that the Obama administration had covered up the problem for more than a year.

  18. Letters to the editor: Drunken driving, Ramirez, and conspiracy theories

On Tuesday, the National Transportation Safety Board proposed lowering the legal limit for a driver's blood alcohol from .08 percent to .05 percent. This is about two beers in an hour for a 155-pound woman. While one can argue whether or not that is too...
