1. Holiday Guide 2012: Chris Jones' Top 10 shows for the season

Chicago has a plethora of holiday shows each and every year — and I’ll be reviewing enough of them over the next couple of weeks to put Rudolph in rehab. But based on many years of seasonal theater-going, here are 10 of our potential favorites for 2012. We’re restricting our choices to specifically seasonal fare — so no “Book of Mormon” or “War Horse.” And certainly no “50 Shades! The Musical.” It’s Christmas time.

  3. Broadway review: Mormons, missionaries and music

If any show could make the case that you can have fun with absolutely anything in the oft-painful run of human experience — AIDS, genocide, genital mutilation, poverty, religion, "The Lion King" — then that show is "The Book of Mormon," the...

  5. 'Mormon' is more than just easy laughs

When Joseph Smith Jr. published The Book of Mormon in 1830, he likely wasn't expecting that an outrageously profane musical that purloined his golden title would dominate the 2011 Tony Awards. Then again, he probably wasn't anticipating "South Park"...

  7. Man About Town: City life driving you crazy? Just say neigh.

I wrestle with my demons just like everybody else, addicted as I am to Mariel Hemingway movies and those little "fun-sized" Snickers bars, of which several trillion are floating around in these weeks after Halloween.

  9. BYU battling Utah in recruiting

BYU, this week’s opponent, is doing OK in recruiting but the school has suffered a little because of Utah’s move to the Pac-12. BYU and Utah are big rivals in recruiting, particularly for the Mormon players, and there is a good number of...

  11. Teachable Moments To Be Acquired by Not Enrolling at UNO

The Who Dat City’s media is all abuzz over the news that UNO’s enrollment is down by 800 students (1). LSU, LA Lafayette and LA Tech were also affected by the state legislature’s wise decision to drop - as in cold turkey - remedial courses for freshman from the state’s “Institutions of higher learning”.

  15. Why Mitt's Mormonism doesn't matter

Mormonism is a minority sect once persecuted by mainstream American Christians for its unconventional doctrines and practice of polygamy. It is still viewed by many as an odd cult. But a Mormon is the Republican nominee for president, and he can take consolation that if he loses, it will not be because of his religion.

  17. Salman Rushdie, freedom writer

In the 1990s, he was the world-famous novelist few people officially laid eyes on. Of Salman Rushdie's dozen-plus novels, it was "The Satanic Verses" (1988) that raised a hue and cry and sent him undercover: Its supposedly sacrilegious portrayal of the prophet Muhammad brought Rushdie a fatwa, a death sentence, from Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (it was lifted in 1998). The writer came to L.A. to accept the Library Foundation of Los Angeles' literary award and to talk about his new memoir of his underground years, "Joseph Anton." He and the book have arrived just as the blowback from "Innocence of Muslims" has caused us all to confront the questions that commandeered a decade of his life.

  19. 'Mormon' fails to make a convert

I'd wanted to take an actual Mormon to see "The Book of Mormon," but the closest I could come was the lovely and patient older daughter — so well scrubbed and shimmery that she looked like an Irish coin.

  21. Chicago filmmaker spent 8 years on new documentary 'Band of Sisters'

"You didn't really have (to) think much for yourself," a nun says of her early years, in the new documentary "Band of Sisters," which has its world premiere at the Siskel Film Center this week. "All that went unchanged for years and years and years — until Vatican II."

  23. 'Book of Mormon' rakes in $1.493 million
