3. Crime & Punishment: WWE Wrestler Allegedly Fired For Supporting Linda McMahon's Senate Campaign

There are no Chick fil-A locations in Connecticut, so Mitch Beck, an executive recruiter who is hosting a state Republican Party shindig at his home in Monroe, planned to have someone drive out to the one in Paramus, N.J., and pick up 100 sandwiches for the event — just to be a dick (or, in his words, support the "First Amendment rights" of gay-bashing Chick fil-A president Dan Cathy). Beck relented after the candidates attending started "catching heat for it, which was not the intent," he told the Monroe Patch website, adding, "There was never any intent to hurt anybody's feelings or even to take a side on a gay rights issue" (which you may have mistakenly thought because Chick fil-A is at the center of a gay rights issue). Beck has decided to donate 90 of the sandwiches he ordered to a homeless shelter, reports the Connecticut Post, keeping 10 for himself "to see what they taste like." They taste like ground-up bird parts and hate, Mitch.

Helen Gurley Brown, legendary editor of Cosmopolitan and doyenne of stiletto-heeled self-empowerment, died Monday at 90. The author of "Sex and the Single Girl," Brown was widely credited for revolutionizing the precepts of women's media, transforming a melange of recipes and homemaking tips into an unapologetic celebration of sexual, social and professional striving captured in cover lines like "Four Fab New Vibrators" and "Get Hit On All The Time."

  11. Is it an earthquake, or simply a shock?

Whatever its literary merits, “Fifty Shades of Grey” can take credit for a few things. The phenomenal best-seller has brought kinky erotica out from under the covers and into the mainstream. It has provided comedians and parodists with ripe fodder for jokes and spoofs. And it has inspired some previously buttoned-up couples — such as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy — to get their freak on.

  23. Kurt Andersen stays a step ahead of history with 'True Believers'

The public intellectual has become a rare creature in America, but Kurt Andersen has helped keep it from going extinct. He co-founded Spy magazine, was editor of New York magazine and now writes pieces like Time's 2011 person of the year story, the Protester. These days, though, he mostly splits his time between hosting "Studio 360," broadcast weekly to 160 NPR stations, and writing the occasional bestselling novel. His next book, "True Believers" (Random House: 447 pp., $27), comes out Tuesday.
