1. Achieving Beervana in Portland, Ore.

I can't believe they want coffee.
I can't believe they want coffee. Granted, it is 9:30 a.m. when I pick up my friends Jim and Lenora at the Portland airport. But in the weeks I've anticipated their visit, I've had beer on my brain. -------------------- FOR THE RECORD: Portland...

3. Michael Jackson: king of style

Wearing one glove, Michael Jackson reached into the pop culture zeitgeist and influenced an entire generation, giving pieces as simple as military badges and a fedora an imprint that, for a time, was as powerful as his music.

7. Red carpet chic

When the ladies of television take to the red carpet for today's Emmy Awards, there is only one thing we really care about: What will they be wearing?
When the ladies of television take to the red carpet for today's Emmy Awards, there is only one thing we really care about: What will they be wearing? Will it be the long gowns that usually hold sway at Hollywood award shows? Or, taking a cue from Cannes...

9. Tkees: Dressy leather sandals

Don't want to stumble through the sand on laser-cut platforms at a Malibu beach party? Rubber flip-flops too casual? Tkees, a collection of dressy leather sandals, are a beachy choice with an interesting slogan: Cosmetics for your feet.

11. Denim on denim no longer a 'don't'

The rules for wearing denim with denim are about to be broken. Though it was a major no-no in the 1990s (think Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in their bedazzled denim ensembles complete with denim hats and accessories), today the combination of jeans with a chambray shirt or a denim vest is not only acceptable, it's current.

15. Isaiah Mustafa has style beyond Old Spice

You know Isaiah Mustafa from those wildly popular Old Spice television commercials — a bare-chested, fresh-from-the-shower Adonis who extols the virtues of body wash in stentorian tones. The man has charm, the man has six-pack abs and, ladies, he even has "two tickets to that thing you like." He's "the man your man could smell like."

19. Vanessa Bruno brings her unique looks to Los Angeles

Vanessa Bruno likes to say that she makes "easy clothes for difficult girls." But in the Parisian designer's world, "difficult" doesn't mean someone who must coordinate her outfit with an alcohol monitoring anklet but a woman with original taste who wants her clothes to reflect her individuality.

21. An urban makeover

When I started working at the Los Angeles Times nearly 15 years ago, downtown L.A. was a style wasteland. Sure, there were denim wash houses, sewing shops, designer showrooms and studios, but you wouldn't know it walking down the street. Fashion was something that happened behind closed doors.

23. Taryn Rose returns with new comfort fashion shoe lines

Two years after selling her original namesake company, Taryn Rose is back in full force. The orthopedist/shoe designer, who made her name crafting fashion-forward designs that are as comfortable as they are pretty, has debuted a luxury line that is available at Neiman Marcus, with new designs rolling out this fall. A less expensive division is featured on the Home Shopping Network. And with new partners the Schottenstein Group, Rose will have a midrange line available at stores including Bloomingdales, Nordstrom and Macy's next year.
