1. Quarterback change reiterates that NFL is foremost a business

The NFL is a business.
The NFL is a business. Easy to say. Hard to swallow. Nowhere was that more evident this week than in San Francisco, where Alex Smith officially lost his starting quarterback job to Colin Kaepernick, who had filled in for him after Smith suffered a...

1. Falcons (2 last week): They aren't getting any style points for the way they have been winning lately, but they are the NFL's only unbeaten. 2. Texans (1): There is no disgrace to losing to Aaron Rodgers when he's on his game like he was Sunday. 3....

9. Dire straits and narrow victories are the norm in NFL Week 11

Just another ho-hum NFL Sunday.
Just another ho-hum NFL Sunday. Houston beat Jacksonville. Atlanta beat Arizona. Dallas beat Cleveland. What else would you expect from three home teams favored by a combined 33 points? Now, please excuse those winning teams as they strap on...

11. NFL punters are being bullied on the block

Through the first half of the NFL season, there have been 14 punts blocked. That might not sound like a lot, but consider there were nine in the entire 2011 season, meaning the league is on track for more than three times as many. Sure, it could be a...

15. NFL's top teams doing well despite less help from key players

Plenty of NFL tight ends would be happy to switch places with San Francisco's Vernon Davis this season. The 49ers are 6-2 with a two-game lead in the NFC West and look to be in position to make another run deep into the playoffs or beyond. But this isn't...

19. Jeff Fisher has no regrets — and neither should the Miami Dolphins

21. Week 7: Seahawks at 49ers

49ers QB Alex Smith vs. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson: This isn’t that kind of matchup – mano-a-mano – but the play of the opposing quarterbacks definitely will impact the outcome in this battle of NFC West co-leaders. And they’re coming at it during a short week to prepare for everything the opposing defenses can throw at them, and from opposite directions off their most-recent outings. Wilson had the best game of his rookie season, passing for two touchdowns in the final 7½ minutes as the Seahawks rallied for a one-point victory over the Patriots as the capper to his 16-of-27, 293-yard, three-TD effort. Smith, meanwhile, threw three interceptions in an eight-pass span and was sacked four times in what looked like a turn-back-the-clock outing in a 26-3 loss to the Giants. Can Wilson continue his rapid progression against the league’s No. 1-ranked defense? Can Smith recapture his efficient touch that was vital to the 49ers going 13-3 last season and winning four of their first five games this season against the Seahawks’ defense that is better than the one he beat twice last season?
