Nassau County fire officials confirmed one person was killed in the fire at 748 Hunt Lane, but have not released the identity.
Neighbor Isabelle Veyvoda said the victim was Eddie Abkarian, who had lived in the house with his wife, Solanj, for about 12 years. Records show Edward Abkarian, 57, lives at that address.
Another neighbor, Gilbert Azran, 56, said he heard what he called "a small explosion" sometime after 5:30 a.m. and looked out his bedroom window to see flames lighting the darkened sky.
"It sounded like aluminum cans being thrown" about, said Azran, who called 911. By the time Azran reached the street, he said, the wife was yelling that her husband was still inside.
"I don't care about the house," Azran said the woman was yelling to firefighters. "I just want my husband."
Veyvoda called the victim "a nice man."
Fire officials said the fire broke out at 5:48 a.m.
Three departments -- Manhasset, Port Washington and Great Neck -- responded to the call and battled the blaze at the two-story red brick home until after 7 a.m.
It is unclear what caused the fire. Officials said it is under investigation.
