National Weather Service meteorologists in Springfield confirmed a total of 20 tornadoes embedded in a squall of severe straight-line winds on May 8, 2009. A Derecho created a swath of damage from winds between 70 and 90
miles-per-hour crossing the midsection of the Ozarks.
With many sightings of flying debris had many Ozarkers convinced their damage was purely tornadic... yet hefty straight-line winds on the order of 70 to 90 miles-an-hour were powerful enough to fly sheet metal, tree debris and more.
