Red Cross closes shelter, opens service centers in Newton County

By Gene Hartley

NEOSHO, Mo. -- The American Red Cross closed its shelter for tornado victims at Calvary Baptist Church on Monday morning because nobody was using it. The Red Cross will open a Relief and Multi-Agency Resource Center at the same church from noon - 6 on Tuesday and every day afterwards as long as it’s needed.

The church is at 2650 Oakridge Extensions in Neosho. Many services will be available at the center, including clean-up kits, water and other bulk supplies.

Two other locations will be open Monday afternoon with bulk distribution supplies. These are at First Baptist Church in Newtonia and at the Incident and Command Center at the intersection of Missouri 43 at Iris Road. Caseworkers and Outreach Teams also will be available in Newtonia.

A shelter opened at noon Monday in Seneca at First Baptist Church, 901 Oneida.

The governor’s office said three joint federal and state damage assessment teams will collect property damage information for citizens and businesses, and three joint teams will collect information on infrastructure damages in Newton, Jasper and Barry counties.

The teams will try to determine whether those counties are eligible for federal disaster relief aid. The teams are comprised of Federal Emergency Management Agency, State Emergency Management Agency, Small Business Administration and local government representatives.
