Residents of the Chestnut Inn Apartments in downtown Thayer were awakened by an early morning fire, Wednesday, April 2, 2008. The local fire department, assisted by the West Plains Fire Department, battled the blaze that destroyed what was home to several residents of the Chestnut Inn. Everyone was apparently evacuated safely from the building which was reportedly at full occupancy before the flames completely gutted the structure. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining buildings. It is apparent the Chestnut Inn, however, is a complete loss. The fire was started in the trash can in one of the apartment units, according to the local radio station.

This is crazy! Those sirens woke me up when they started, but I never thought it was a fire. I figured some kind of car accident.
