Derailed cars dragged to the side, spillage vacuumed up with a huge suction pipe, attached to a mobile vacuum tanker truck, surveys made, tracks laid and crews paid, the job is almost done. Inspectors must walk the track, to visibly inspect and release the job. The Conductors & Engineers had been called and at the ready, as the ground shakes from the rumble of the slow-slow moving first southbound train passing the Old Depot at Mammoth, around the fish hatchery curve, over the new tracks on the Warm Fork bridge, under the 63 bypass bridge, past the carnage of the broken cars and on to the beautiful view of straight track, with the rippling waters of Spring River next to the track. It shouldn't be nerve racking for these crews to see the first train pass, it should be rewarding, because this type of job has been done time & time again.. They have done there rescue & reconstruction job again. From my house, about two miles away from the tracks, I can hear the grumble of the diesel engines which power the electric turbines giving power to the behemoth pulling engines. The sound of the whistle/horn as they approach & cross roadside crossings. The rattle & bang of some loaded, some empty cars, as they strain against there couplings & in approximately 35 hours, the juggling act of switching cars, passing trains, scheduling crews goes on. BNSF Thayer South Railroad, is up and running trains.
