Ironically, not even 100 yards from the last train derailment, another rail car crash has happened. Official cause of the accident, is still under investigation. A box cars began to roll backwards, down the hill from there transfer location, just north of Thayer. Gaining momentum, on the downhill grade, the unattended cars, passed the Thayer depot, headed south. A northbound train with two crew members was notified of the run-away. They were able to put their locomotive in Emergency lockdown, safely (but rapidly) disembark (run) off of their northbound engine. The Northbound engines had come to a full stop, just over the southbound approach of the Warm Fork (342.5) bridge. The collision jumbled box cars, which were toppled on top of each other. Two flat cars came to rest with the front wheels of one, and the rear wheels of another, about 1/8th of the way, into Spring River Lake. Fortunately no one was injured in the accident, and the ongoing investigation will determind the cause.
