The First two pictures were taken on 060508 six miles north of Mound City, MO by my niece as they appeared over her home. There was a funnel cloud reported just a couple of miles on north of there at the same time. She said it moved in on them so fast that when they ran for cover they were unable to get inside in time.

The third picture, taken in 1980 from the bluff on our property near the Scenic View on 165, Hollister, shows what preceded Point Royal.

The clouds in the first picture are mamma(tus) clouds. They often appear on the underbellies of cumulonimbus clouds, which usually precede severe weather.

Also...... The mamma clouds are caused by warm air sinking with downdrafts, forming bubble-like formations on the bottom of a cloud.

Yes, Jonathan, those are mammatus clouds. They don't always indicate bad weather, but are frequently found around thunderstorms for the reasons you mention.
