Amelia Barker, a Springfield, Missouri native, is trying to help people overcome the obstacles so many people face when trying to get necessary healthcare.

Did you know that in 2005, nearly 15 million adults did not get needed medical care because they couldn't afford it? When faced with an added expense of traveling to reach a doctor, that number would grow exponentially.

Medical Miles is a project that will assist people with transportation and expenses when they need to travel to receive out-of-area medical care. The services provided will include airfare and hotel accommodations for patients and one companion if they need to travel to receive inpatient or outpatient medical care away from home.

Amelia tested this project already, helping two different families in Springfield travel to the NIH to receive the medical care that they needed. Now, she hopes to take the project nationwide.

The Medical Miles project is a project that was submitted as part of the American Express Members project where people share ideas online and then ultimately vote to determine which projects will share in $2.5 million in funding from American Express.

You can help with a simple vote!

To nominate this project for potential funding, please go to http://www.membersproject.com/project/view/LXAV7D.

Together, we can help better healthcare take flight!
