Debbie Earnhardt of northern Greene County was awakened by an uproar of cackling form her chickens.
She grabbed a camera and took these shots of a very large cat!

Nice pictures, yes! Nice animal, no! Chickens are no different than one's cattle. If they are being preyed upon by this known predator of our area, then that predator needs to be 'taken care of.'

Surly you did not take those pictures in Missouri . The DNR says that there are almost no big cats here, and they are only in remote areas. I have seen two mountain lions (w/tails) not far north of there in Dallas County, about 15 miles apart.

Who trusts what the DNR says? Bobcats are predators and look good taxidermied! There's too many around.

Wow, I did not know how uneducated many Missourians are when it comes to their local wildlife! You folks need to go to the Missouri Department of Conservation's website mdc.mo.gov and brush up on your knowledge. Many are posting false info.

No "black" panthers in MO, and very few occurrences of mountain lions. The pic is of a bobcat and a large one can weigh up to 25-30 lbs. I know house cats that weigh that much. Bobcats are very common in MO and can be hunted and are active in day.

Hello...it is a wild animal, checking out what is around it's habitat. We all know that they exist but flip out when they are actually seen. The chicken owners need to wild-life proof their coop and let nature be or deal with the consequences.

UM, Well, there certainly "are" black mountain lions in Missouri. Just because they are not documented in the MDC books doesn't mean others haven't seen them. Of course, if they aren't here and someone shot one, that didn't happen either?

Well Karen, I'm sure that in addtion to believing there are black panthers in Missouri you would probably believe that there is a population of "bigfoot" here as well. I have a degree in wildlife biology and work for the MDC but what do we know.

Karen, I also have heard that there are elephants and cheetahs running wild in Greene County. Has anyone seen where my pet lion ran off to?

Jake, Since you have a "degree" in wildlife biology and work for the "MDC" I'm guessing you have seen the entire state of Missouri and know for a fact that the black panther I saw last week and the mountain lion that lives near my house don't exist?

Jake says ...

Woody you must be smokin' whatever it is your growin out there. I know the biology and habitat of the state of MO. Its my job. The only species of large cat that can be called "black" is a jaguar or a melanisic leopard. We DO NOT have them here.

Jake says ...

MO does not have a "population" of mountain lions like we have a population of bears. Occasionally one may roam our way. Why is it that all the idiots are the ones who see the black panthers? Hmmm...because you are an idiot and do not know.

What is the big deal? Ok, if someone said they saw black panther or mountain lion, let it go. Animals actually do show up where people think they shouldn't be. Why does someone have to argue about it.
