Amazon Sidewalk raises security concerns, local experts speak out
SPRINGFIELD,Mo. (KY3) - On Tuesday June 8 all Amazon devices including: Amazon Echo devices, Ring Security Cams, outdoor lights, motion sensors, and Tile trackers will be automatically opted in to sharing your network through Amazon Sidewalk.
According to Amazon, “Sidewalk uses wireless low-energy Bluetooth and 900MHz radio signals to connect compatible devices beyond the normal range of Wi-Fi capability.”
“Sidewalk is designed with multiple layers of privacy and security to secure data traveling on the network and to keep customers safe and in control,” Amazon said.
Even though Amazon has put in these layer of security, sharing network connection raises some concerns with internet and information safety and one lo cal Springfield expert told us why some would want to opt-out.
According to the owner of Rethink Tech, Shawn Kirkbride, extending your network could have some security issues and we do not know the long-term affects of sidewalk.
“There are people who are going to have legitimate concerns about two things. One is sharing their bandwidth with their neighbors even though it is small people might not want that to be connected to everything else. The second is all the information shared with Amazon,” Kirkbride said.
