MOUNTAIN GROVE, Mo. (KY3) - Firefighters battled a fire that spread on the square in Mountain Grove.

Firefighters responded around the noon hour. Witnesses say the smoke filled several businesses in the area. Part of one building collapsed.

Witnesses said they heard something that sounded like an explosion. After analyzing the collapse, fire crews say they do not believe an explosion happened. Instead fire crews believe the loud noise witnesses heard was the collapsing building itself.

It appears it started inside the event center, and then the toppled the ceiling hit the surrounding area. The incident then spread to other businesses, including a church. The church toppled down a few hours after the fire. The city administrator said three businesses could likely be total losses, including the church.

The Mountain Grove city administrator said crews believe the building may have collapsed onto power lines, creating a spark that potentially triggered a fire. The city administrator said the state State Fire Marshal has been contacted, and will then confirm whether or not that caused the fire.

There is still no word on what triggered the collapse. Everything is still under investigation.

The city administrator says no one suffered any injuries.

Several people who witnessed the fire say people nearby began offering help right away.

“Getting away from the building was the first priority,” said Kris Booth. ”We were sitting there talking and then all of a sudden a loud boom and crash happened. We looked at each other and said oh man that didn’t sound right.”

As smoke and debris started pouring across the buildings, those nearby like Booth ran to see what they could do.

”The first thing to do is make sure no one is in there,” he said. “Right then and there we took off banging on all the doors. Making sure no one was in there.”

Those nearby also helped make sure firefighters got proper supplies during the heat.

”We have not taken a break, helping them as much as we can,” Booth said. “The community came together getting the ice, towels for the firefighters. It was beautiful how the community came together to help everybody. It was pretty insane to see.”

Firefighters with Mountain Grove say they are very thankful for all the help and support they received from the community on Tuesday.

Stay tuned for more developments.
