Alex Jirgens

I’m a native Kansan – born in Ottawa, grew up in Pleasanton, McPherson and rural Marion County, and I attended school in McPherson where my Dad was a high school history teacher.

I grew up watching KWCH. Seeing Roger Cornish, Cindy Klose, Merril Teller and Bruce Haertl got me interested in journalism at a young age, and felt that maybe I could be a reporter or be an anchor one day.

My on-air career began in 2012 while I was a student at Hutchinson Community College. Initially, I was a board operator and Sunday morning church service announcer for Eagle Communications in Hutchinson before moving to KNGL/KBBE in McPherson in the summer of 2013 where I was a DJ and produced commercials. Upon my start at Kansas State University in the fall of 2015, I moved to Manhattan Broadcasting Company where I worked as a DJ and news reporter, as well as an announcer for campus radio station KSDB and worked in various positions for on-campus TV station KKSU. I interned and reported for Rogers Communications at 680 News/CFTR in Toronto, Canada, in the summer of 2017. Upon my graduation from K-State, where I majored in Journalism/Mass Communications, I joined KIMT in Mason City, Iowa, where I covered various stories for the CBS affiliate for four years. My coverage included the Winter Dance Party commemorating ‘The Day the Music Died’ (and also interviewing legendary singer Don McLean), tornadoes, state football championships, and RAGBRAI, the annual bike ride across Iowa.

I am engaged to Paige, an Iowa native, and will be getting married in September. My hobbies include traveling, learning about history, visiting family and friends, cooking and going to sporting events (including the Chiefs, Packers, Wildcats, baseball, basketball and hockey).
