SPARTA, Mo. The Sparta Fire Protection District is cleaning up after a devastating fire at one of its stations.
Assistant Chief Dusty Colyer reports the fire destroyed the department’s Station 2 building and one of its fire trucks. Colyer said the fire Thursday night started in a wall behind a propane-fueled heater that is built into a wall at the station. He added that it’s not yet clear if it was a problem with a propane line or an electrical short that started the fire.
Fire crews were able to get three of four trucks out of the building, but the fourth truck was destroyed when the building’s roof collapsed.
Colyer said the department is waiting to find out how much of the loss insurance will cover. The timing of the fire is especially bad, since the district is in the middle of efforts to rebuild its Station 1.
Colyer added that the fire puts a tanker and an engine out of commission for a while, so his department will have to rely on more mutual aid help from neighboring fire departments.
