6 Meek's stores closing in the Ozarks, 20 layoffs

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Meek's is closing six Missouri-based stores. They also plan to lay off twenty workers.

A spokesperson for the lumber and hardware business says it's all about consolidating stores.

Stores that are no longer open: East Sunshine in Springfield, Greenfield, Saint Robert, Mountain Grove, Doniphan and Poplar Bluff.

According to a new release, this is a 'data-driven business decision' made by the new owners of Meek's. The company was sold in late September.

On Monday, there were twenty layoffs across these six locations. Transfers were offered. For example, all but two employees at the Sunshine location could transfer.

Meek's employees say they'll contact customers with pending orders to ensure delivery promises are kept.

From company spokesperson:

The Meek's location on East Sunshine in Springfield has been consolidated into the Meek's location on Kansas Expressway, six miles away.
- Greenfield, Mo being consolidated into Mount Vernon, Mo 23 miles away
- Saint Robert, Mo being consolidated into Rolla, Mo 29 miles away
- Poplar Bluff, Mo, Doniphan, Mo and Mountain Grove, Mo being consolidated into West Plains, Mo. Based on the distance of Poplar Bluff and Doniphan from West Plains (more than 30 minutes drive), Meek's is proactively referring those customers to Gamblin Lumber Company in Poplar Bluff.
