Active shooter training course held in Republic Friday night
Tonight in Republic, an 'open to the public' training session about what to do in a "shooter" situation. It was a full house, about 50 people were in attendance to learn what to do if they encountered an active shooter. One man even traveled six hours just to be at the training.
"You just don’t know when it is going to happen and we need to be ready." said Greg Kips, who came from northeastern Kansas for the training Friday night. It was a six hour drive, but he wasn't doing it just for himself.
"My daughter just started working at Walmart," Kips said through tears. "This Walmart thing happened and I thought man I need to be able to tell her, train her, prepare her, if this would ever happen where she is working."
The training was held by Matt Coombes of Shield Force International.
"What is the worst thing you can do? Nothing." Coombes said during the seminar.
He discussed what happens to your body when an active shooter bursts through the door.
"If we don’t understand it, it can contribute to our fear level," Coombes explained. "If our hands start shaking, knees start shaking, we will start to panic and think we are hopeless. That is not the case, I need to take a few deep breaths, I need mentally gain composure of what I want to do."
Many trainers teach the Run, Hide, Fight method. Matt teaches the three outs.
"Take out, lock out, or get out. And we can do any of those the first the third the second. For instance, if the threat is right in front of me I might have to take him out. I might not be able to lock him out because we might not have a door. We might not have an exit where I am at so that might limit my out strategy." he said.
He also says don't be in denial.
"When in doubt, there is no doubt," he added during the training. "You respond according to your training. If you think is that gunfire? Yes that is gunfire until I prove that it isn’t. What is the harm of taking shelter or leaving your cart of goodies in Walmart and going out a side exit door only to learn that it was a fire cracker some kid set off as a joke. Does that really change your life that dramatically?"
Greg hopes to take this information back for his loved ones.
"My daughter specifically because I have the Walmart thing on the brain. To be able to tell her what to do to survive an active shooter if they come into her store." Kips added.
If you weren't able to make it to the training, Shield Force International is holding another public training on Thursday the 22nd of August. If you would like to sign up, you can call Shield Force International at 417-233-1338.
