Nixa's Century Elementary gets a new four-legged staff member

NIXA, Mo.-- Century Elementary in Nixa got a new staff member that's been impacting the school.

This new member has been making it a little less 'ruff' to get the work done. The newest member of the school staff wont judge you, will have unconditional love for you and can always be seen wagging his tail.

Orbit, is a year-and-a-half-old professional therapy dog. He is from Cares Inc in Concordia, Kan.

Tina Russell is the school counselor and full-time caregiver for Orbit. Tina says Orbit wears his vest everyday to know he's on the job. She says he is trained to be calm in any situation. She says he can sense when someone is excited, angry, or upset.

Orbit doesn't just lay around all day, he has a job to deliver the mail. Students can write letters to Orbit at anytime. He then will respond.

Russell along with the principal, Cara Blevins says Orbit helps more than just emotionally, but academically too. Blevins says Orbit helped a student who has difficulty communicating.

Blevins says no student has a severe allergy to dogs in the school. But, if someone is slightly allergic, Blevins says the student can pet Orbit if they wish, but then they will immediately be instructed to wash their hands.
