Man faces murder charge after fatal shooting in Dent County
A man from Dent County is charged with murdering a friend during an argument on Thursday night. Investigators believe Fridtjov Severud, 55, fatally shot Michael Gehm, 41, at a rural home.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Department says it got a call from Severud about 8:15. He said his friend had been shot at a home in the 800 block of County Road 4060, about seven miles northeast of Salem off Missouri 19. Dent County sheriff’s deputies and a state trooper found Gehm dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the face.
When officers executed a search warrant at the home, they found a .45 caliber pistol and a single spent cartridge case.
Investigators also learned Gehm was on the phone with a witness who heard Gehm and Severud talking. The witness heard Gehm say, “If you’re going to point that thing at me, you better pull the trigger” and then heard a gunshot. The witness heard Severud say, “How does that make you feel”? Severud then discovered the phone was on and said, “You better get him help. He’s been shot,” and then hung up the phone.
Detectives say Severud admitted he shot Gehm and also admitted to shooting him from a standing position while Gehm was seated.
Severud was charged late Friday afternoon with first-degree murder. He’s in the Dent County jail in lieu of a $1 million bond.
