Springfield, Mo. -- Drury students are giving free studio portraits for veterans and their families leading up to Veterans Day.
Emma Velasquez holds her camera for a quick look through the lens but soon she will be using her keen sense of photography to capture portraits for veterans free of charge, a service she holds close to her heart.
"My family comes from people, who come from a line of people in the Army," Emma Velasquez, a student photographer, said. "My dad is currently in the Army, and every time I see families that come here, it's really touching and very nice and friendly and it just makes me feel good like helping and being a part of something that can make me feel better."
Drury students will be taking portraits of veterans right before the holidays and Veterans Day to gain experience.
"Every semester we do it, right before Christmas time, so people could use it as holiday cards if they like and students get a lot of experience out of it because they're learning how to photograph people they just met," Rebecca Miller, Associate Professor, said.
"It gives us a good experience, like a future work experience, getting to interact with people, but we also get to be a part of something way bigger than ourselves and get to meet amazing people," Velasquez said.
The view through the lens of the camera is all to pay tribute to people and families who have sacrificed for our freedom.
"The basic idea behind this is to thank veterans for their service, it's our little way of using our skills and talents to say thank you to their service," Miller said.
"It's a reminder that there are people out there that are still remembering about them or are proud to be from this country and are proud of their service," Velasquez said.
Anyone who is a veteran or active duty can schedule an appointment, there are only 50 space available for the 15 minute photo sessions.
