Fire critically injures 2 children in Springfield, Mo. home

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Two young children suffered critical injuries after a house fire in north Springfield Sunday. A four year old boy and three year old girl remain in Mercy Hospital in critical but stable condition.

Firefighters responded to the 1900 block of North Burton Sunday morning. The fire did not do extensive exterior damage.

A neighbor tells KY3 he ran inside the burning house to try to save the two preschool-aged kids. He says he feels terrible he was unable to find them. Firefighters later rescued the kids. One adult also also suffered injuries.

The fire marshal is still working to determine a cause. The fire chief says he does not suspect anything criminal related to the fire. He believes some of the family was asleep at the time of the fire.

Firefighters on scene say there were smoke detectors in the house, but it's not clear if they were working. That is also part of the fire marshal's investigation.
