Update: Toilet paper fire forces evacuation of Pipkin Middle School

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Staff at Pipkin Middle School evacuated just after noon Monday when a fire broke out in the basement.

The district says someone set toilet paper on fire on the floor of a bathroom. The fire department says a school resource officer put the fire out with a fire extinguisher. The fire was contained to the bathroom, but smoke filled the building along Boonville Avenue.

Students were moved to the Fusion Center along Campbell Avenue for parents to pick them up during the lunch hour. If parents could not pick them up early, staff remained with students until buses arrived at the end of the day.

School district spokeswoman Teresa Bledsoe says "the investigation to determine the perpetrator is still ongoing." A fire marshal with the Springfield Fire Department, along with Springfield and school police were also called in for more investigation.
