NIXA, Mo. An hours-long standoff in Nixa ended with a man killing himself near a church.

Christian County deputies, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers and Nixa police officers spent most of the morning and early afternoon hours trying to talk a man with a gun out of killing himself. Officers responded to reports of a man with a gun as early as 7 a.m. The deputies who originally responded didn’t find anyone.

About two hours later the sheriff’s office got another call, saw the man, and closed a two mile stretch of U.S. 160 south of South Street in Nixa Saturday morning.

The man ended up walking to the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Canyon Lane where the congregation was holding a worship service. The man did not enter the church, and police say the people inside were not in danger. A Highway Patrol SWAT team did evacuate the 20 people inside the church safely.

Negotiators tried for several hours to talk the man into giving up his gun, however, the standoff ended when the man shot himself to death about 100 feet from the church building. Police have not released the man’s name.
