SURVIVE THE STORM: Missouri ranks 10th for tornado frequency

On average every year there are 46.7 tornadoes in Missouri. Tornadoes can occur here at any time of the year.

Believe it or not, we ranked 10th in the U.S. for the most tornadoes. In fact, throughout history there have tornadoes every month of the year of course the winter season sees the least.

November and December gets an average of 1. January through February there are 2.

Then monthly averages ramp up during severe weather season which is from April through June. April sees around 8. The most tornadoes occur in May averaging 12. In June averages fall to 6.

August is the month we see the least with 1 and in the fall there’s an average of around 2 tornadoes in September and October.

Tornadoes are more likely to occur in the afternoon in this region of the country. Tornado development is more likely to occur in the afternoon and in to the evening. The peak time though is 4 p.m.
