Police investigate deadly shooting involving U.S. Marshal at Springfield shopping center

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Police identified a man killed in a deadly officer-involved shooting involving a U.S. Marshal.

Jared D. Kelly, 36, of Springfield, Mo., died in the shooting. Police did not identify the U.S. Marshals' deputy.

Officers responded to the parking lot of the Old Town Centre on South Campbell around 11 a.m. There was a heavy police presence from the Springfield Police Department as well as deputies from the Greene County Sheriff's office.

The U.S. Marshals Office said officers were attempting to arrest a man wanted on federal drug charges. They made contact with the man outside of a MetroPCS located in the Old Town Centre shopping plaza. The U.S. Marshals Office said the suspect then pulled out a weapon. That is when the Marshal shot the fugitive.

Kelly later died at a Springfield hospital.

The Springfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is currently investigating this homicide. No further information will be released at this time.
