Police confirm 2 deaths in 48-hour spike of overdose cases in Springfield, Mo.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Police confirm two deaths in a sudden dramatic spike in opioid drug overdoses in the Springfield-Greene County area.

Authorities responded to 20 overdoses from Wednesday afternoon through Friday.

Firefighters are some of the first to respond to overdoses. Springfield Fire Chief David Pennington convened an emergency meeting Thursday to address the sudden spike. A group was formulated at the meeting, tasked with determining the best course of action to confront the incidence of overdoses.

Prior to this recent spike, 42 overdose deaths have been reported to the Springfield-Greene County Health Department so far this year.
