Police had been to Pierce City house multiple times before murder-suicide
Sara Spears and her daughter Kaydee Moerer, 10, were found shot to death in their Pierce City home Monday morning in what investigators suspect is a murder-suicide.
Lawrence County Sheriff Brad Delay says it’s possible that the two have been dead for several days.
Sheriff Delay says they have been dispatched to the home multiple times since October 31, including well-being checks for 10-year-old Kaydee because she’d been missing from class.
The Department of Family Services asked police to check on her on November 10, but police couldn’t get in touch with Spears and didn’t have enough cause to force their way into the home.
Then, Monday, they received another well-being check after nobody had heard from anyone in the house all weekend. This time, officers noted that the cars were in the exact same spot they had been on Friday, and entered the home.
They found a horrific crime scene.
Spears has two other children, neither of whom live with her and are safe. Sheriff Delay says Kaydee’s father is “not in the picture.”
It’s the fourth time police have visited this rural house since Halloween. Sheriff Delay says they responded to a call that day because they feared Spears’ autistic son might have run off, but he was okay and is now believed to be living with Spears’ other daughter.
There was another well-being check on November 1, just one day later, for Kaydee, but police say that they made contact with Spears and everything seemed to be in order.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning in Springfield. If nothing unusual turns up, Sheriff Delay says this case will likely be ruled a murder-suicide.
