Police identify man killed in officer-involved shooting in north Springfield

Police released the identity of a man shot and killed in exchange of gunfire with officers in Springfield Monday.

Joshua S. Stanford, 40, of Springfield, died at the scene.

Police responded to the 1500 block of West Lee around 3:55 p.m. after a 911 caller stated she observed a man stealing a package from a neighbor's porch. Officers observed a man matching the description in the area of Fort and Dale in north Springfield. As officers pursued the suspect on foot, he produced a handgun and fired the weapon at the officers.

Police say Stanford ran into an alley behind 2109 N. Fort where he was contacted a second time by one of the officers. The officers say he threatened them with the gun, refusing to comply with verbal commands. The officer then fired the his gun. The officers and paramedics tried to revive Stanford at the scene.
