Police identify man killed by police at Springfield apartment complex

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Police identified a man shot and killed by officers Monday night at a Springfield apartment complex.

The shooting happened at the Sunset Place Apartments in south Springfield off of Meadowbrook. Bryan A. Ryder, 38, of Springfield, died in the shooting.

Police first responded to an argument between Ryder and a woman around 7:30 p.m. Investigators say the officer fired the shots after being attacked. Officers say they gave several verbal commands to Ryder to drop a knife. Officers and paramedics conducted lifesaving procedures, but he died at the scene.

Investigators questioned the woman involved who was injured. Police say she was treated at a hospital with injuries.

Police say the officer who fired the shots is on administrative leave.

Witness Deshawn Dean says it happened at an apartment not too far from his. He says he and his roommate were playing video games when they heard the gunshots.

"So I know I heard five gunshots," said Dean. "First, I thought someone got killed, murdered . But I guess the cops shot the person."
