March in the Ozarks means more opportunities to go out to the park and play. But, it also means that you need to start preparing for the spring severe weather season.

Kira Johnson, soon to be mother of 3, shared her plan for a tornado warning saying, "I don't have a basement, so we would just go in our bathroom because that's the safest room in our house in case of a tornado."

But what if a warning is issued while you're away from your home?

Aaron Wilson, father of a young boy enjoying the park today, responded saying, "The next step would be to find the storm shelters here in the park, which are like the restrooms and things in that area."

And thanks advances in technology like Smartphones, you can stay up to date on the weather conditions no matter where you are.

"I get my weather updates through mobile apps , usually the Weather Channel, KY3 and AccuWeather," Wilson said.

And once you get the alerts, it's important that you have a plan of action that will keep everyone safe and calm.

"You have to keep the kids calm, it doesn't help them any to be freaking out as bad as it is, as long as the parents are doing their job, making sure everyone is where they need to be to be safe," Wilson said.

And it's never too early to make sure that your kids know what to do when severe weather moves in either.

"I should probably start teaching them drills now that they're to where they would understand it," Johnson said about her sons.

If you are ever outside, say at a park and find yourself needing to take shelter immediately, sometimes your best bet is to go into a bathroom. Just remember that whatever shelter you find, you want to put as much space as you can between yourself and the outdoors, and you want that to be a space without any windows.

It is also important to make sure that before you even head outside that you're staying weather aware and checking the forecast. You can download the free KY3 and KSPR weather apps in the Apple or Android store for the latest weather updates. These apps can also follow your GPS location and will alert you where ever you are.
