A Satanic after-school club could meet at an elementary school in Springfield.

The Satanic Temple wants to start a club at Watkins Elementary School on the west side of the city. The after-school program would teach children lessons about rationality and science, as well as about Satan.

The Temple said last weekend that it would begin petitioning school districts in nine states to open after-school Satan clubs.

A spokeswoman for the Springfield School District says the district is evaluating the Satanic Temple's request to use Watkins Elementary. The district has not made a final decision.

Statement from Springfield School District:

The schools in our district are a vital part of the community. Because of that, a number of student and community organizations choose to use school facilities for their activities and group meetings. The district's Board of Education has policies, procedures and guidelines in place that govern how school buildings may be used when the buildings are not being used for district educational programs or district-sponsored activities.

Granting a request for use of district facilities does not constitute the district's endorsement of the activity, organization, organization's mission, organization's message or any opinion expressed by the organization, its members or persons who attend the activity.

On Monday, Aug. 1, the District received a request from the Satanic Temple of St. Louis, which asked that they be allowed to use a district school building after school hours to host its After-School Satan Club. As with any organization wanting to use district buildings for non-school sponsored activities, this request will be considered based on the following Board of Education policies:

Organizations that want to use district buildings must also comply with the district's
