REPUBLIC, Mo. -- A family escaped several explosions during a house fire in Republic, Mo. Sunday evening.
Fire crews say they received a 911 call around 7:30pm from the homeowners saying there was a fire in the kitchen of their home in the 2100 block of East Sandelwood street.. By the time crews arrived the fire had spread to the garage and attic with thick smoke coming from the home.
The two adults and two children inside made it out safely and were not injured. Fire crews say the home is almost a total loss. Republic Fire Chief Duane Compton says there were four or five small explosions from gas, paint, and aerosol cans inside the garage, plus one really big explosion.
"There was one of them that was a pretty good explosion with a pretty good fireball that rolled out of that garage. We think it was from the tank of the motorcycle because the tank is just split wide open." Compton said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Compton said they believe it started at the kitchen stove.
