Missouri Highway Patrol identifies 2 men killed in murder-suicide investigation

OSCEOLA, Mo. -- The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department is investigating what is believed to be a murder-suicide.

The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the victims as Charles D Sander, 72 of West Plains, Mo. and Lance E Kilgore, 35 of Nixa, Mo. Investigators have not said who was the shooter.

The shooting happened Friday morning at "The Port" convenience store just before 7:30. St. Clair County Sheriff Scott Keeler believes believes the incident stemmed from a child custody dispute. He says it appears one man shot the other man before turning the gun on himself. No children were with either of the men at the time of the shooting.

"I would like to stress that there is no danger to the public at this time," said Sheriff Keeler. "This was an isolated incident. And we're just going through the investigation process as we are now."

The sheriff is turning over the investigation to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Even with the active crime scene, business continued at the Port gas station and convenience store, where this is the last thing staff expected.

"I was very shocked, first of all concerned that my staff was okay, everybody was alright. They were local, but I personally didn't know them. Everyone that works here did know them, and I feel bad for everyone involved," says Nancy Bryant, Port co-owner. "I'm always telling people how this is the safest place in the world to live because there's never any murders. And then we have one on our doorstep, so it's tough."
