SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield is celebrating the birth of a ew colobus monkey.

First-time mother Raksha gave birth to a black and white baby born Thursday. The sex of the new baby is not yet known. Both mother and baby are doing well.

“Mom is shielding her baby,” said zoo spokeswoman Joey Powell. “But, the baby is so cute; it’s worth it to be patient to try and catch a glimpse of it.”

Native to central and east Africa, black and white colobus monkeys are actually born with white fur. Both remain on exhibit, but the protective mother does have access to the indoor area.

Dickerson Park Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
