Study: Camden County, Mo. one of best places to retire
"There are so many good people here," said Shirley Gage of Camden County. She retired to the Lake of the Ozarks from Texas.
"Everything is here," Gage added.
While access to amenities weren't part of their study, SmartAsset.com found Camden County is one of the best counties in Missouri for retirees.
They looked at the average amount of income for recipients in Camden County, saying the average after taxes is about $20,000. Then they looked at the average cost of living for each county.
For Camden County, the average cost of living is just over $18,000.
They then gave a score based out of 100. With 100 being the best, Camden scored an 85.01. It's the best score in Missouri, and the 44th best in the nation.
"The lake's fabulous," said Richard Smith. "Taxes are absolutely great. You get more bang for your buck."
Smith, who retired to Camden County over a decade ago from California says you can get a bigger home for the same amount of money at the Lake of the Ozarks, gasoline prices are lower, and like Gage, says access to stores and amenities is great.
He also says the region has access to good healthcare, and praised the senior center in Camdenton.
While he says he wishes he didn't live 20 miles away from the city, he's happy in Camden County, and would recommend it as a place to live for people considering retirement.
"My wife always says, 'we ought to move.' Maybe she's getting bored. I don't know," Smith mused. "So I started looking around. I said, 'yeah, if you want to triple our taxes, we can move anywhere you want.' That's putting it mildly. We aren't going anywhere!"
