Suspect charged after shootout with law enforcement

VAN BUREN, Mo. -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a suspect has been charged in the shooting of a Missouri State Trooper and a Carter County Deputy Sheriff.

James D. Cummings, 31, of Van Buren has been charged with four counts of assault in the first degree and four counts of armed criminal action. Cummings was denied bond.

Cummings surrendered just before 5:00 p.m., on Friday. Law enforcement surrounded a home with Cummings inside for much of the day.

Investigators say Cummings got into a shootout with a deputy and a trooper who were serving an eviction notice. Carter County Deputy Brigg Pierson suffered gunshot wounds to the leg, groin and chest. He is hospitalized in St. Louis. Trooper Caleb McCoy suffered gunshot wounds in the shoulder and his protective vest.

The shooting happened off of Route M Friday morning. Carter County is two hours east of Springfield.

The Missouri Highway Patrol's bomb squad was also called in to search the house.
