SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- MoDOT Engineer Travis Koestner says the cables are designed to stop most vehicles, but they are not designed to stop everything.
But, he says according to a federal highway study and a study by University of Missouri on I-70, those cables are more than 95 percent effective in stopping those cross-median crashes.
But there are a few factors that would lead a cable to fail and not work, such as the speed of the vehicle or the angle of the impact.
Sergeant Jason Pace with the Missouri State Highway Patrol urges people to put down the cell phone, regard all distractions, and buckle up.
