Springfield celebrated its Route 66 history Monday afternoon with a birthday celebration.

On April 30, 1926, the city received a telegram at the old Colonial Hotel in downtown Springfield. It officially named the highway Route 66. That made Springfield the birthplace of the iconic 2,400 mile route.

Monday's celebration included free birthday cupcakes and a giant replica of that telegram. This year's Birthplace of Route 66 Festival takes place on August 10th and 11th in downtown Springfield.
