Victim of stabbing at Strafford truck stop dies; man charged in case
Greene County investigators say a hitchhiker injured in a stabbing outside a truck stop Strafford has died.
Shane Young, 32, died from his injuries in the stabbing Saturday. Jordan Smith, 23, faces a second-degree assault charge in the case. The Greene County Prosecutor's office says they're reviewing the case and will decide if the charges should be amended.
Investigators say the two began hitchhiking in Hardy, Ark. this month. The hitchhikers say they had a met years ago. The two traveled together to Strafford. Smith told investigators both were homeless, moving from state-to-state.
Investigators say the two men were drinking beer outside the McDonalds near the Love's truck stop. Smith says he and Young got into a fight after Young got aggressive. That is when investigators say Smith stabbed Young in the stomach with his pocketknife. He told investigators he didn't open the blade at first, but then did after Young kept "coming at him." He told investigators he probably shouldn't have done it.
Smith said he then walked to the truck stop and told an employee to call 911. Strafford Police responded to the call, but then turned the investigation over to the Greene County Sheriff's Office.
